There was a case in Denver, Colorado, back in 1978 that covered just this. Someone was accused of fraud and They came back to Colorado, after the statute of limitations were over. He was arrested for fraud and The ruled that the statute of limitations only applies in criminal cases, when you can be found, not if you are hiding. In other words, if it is possible for the authorities to arrest you but they then the statue of limitations apply. He was convicted.
